LEARN TO CREATE HARDANGER EMBROIDERY

Norma Borski will join us on September 29 to teach the basic steps for making Hardanger Embroidery. Hardanger embroidery is a simple form of whitework named after the area of Norway where it is found. This form of needlework involves counted thread stitches, drawn thread work and some pulled thread embroidery. Different thread colors and beads may be added to embellish your work. Please join us, bring your reading glasses if you need them.

Sample packets and supplies will be available.

LOWELL NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK

TATTING? What's That?

This beautiful needle art is tatting. Tatting can be done by using tatting needles or by using a tatting shuttle. At our March 24th meeting, we will watch an instructional video and practice using tatting needles.

Welcome English Language Learning Students

ROSETTA STONE LANGUAGE LEARNING SOFTWARE

If you are an English as a Second Language learner, please join us. The Stitches and Tattle Tales group welcomes new members and will help you practice your skills. We meet once a month, work on handwork of your choice and listen to short stories, radio shows or poetry. We will set aside meeting time to help you with English conversation practice. If you have a craft or handwork that you enjoy doing, please bring it along. We are always interested in sharing handwork skills.

The library has two copies of Rosetta Stone English Language learning software, several workbooks, picture dictionaries, reference materials, and audio cds and tapes for your use. We offer instruction classes in the use of language software as well as dedicated computers just for this purpose. If you want a break from English, we also provide several books (fiction and non-fiction), DVDs, audios and music in other languages. All items are able to be checked out of the library except for the language software programs.

Library Materials were purchased with a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the state of Massachusetts.

SWEDISH WEAVING

Also known as huck weaving, Swedish huck weaving or huck embroidery, this fiber art is done on the surface of huck or monk's cloth. The basket weave of monk's cloth has the 4 over and 4 under weave of the threads. The yarn is worked under the top threads which are called "floats". All you need to get started is washed (pre-shrunk) monk's cloth, 4-ply yarn, a #13 yarn needle, scissors and a pattern.

TATTING

This is tatting! Beautiful!

There are many items you can make with tatting. Ornaments, doilies, boarders around hankies (blast from the past), collars (another blast from the past) and of course bookmarks. There are two basic methods of tatting; needle tatting and shuttle tatting. Do you know someone who can teach this handcraft to us? Please let me know.

PUNCH NEEDLE
Some members of the S&TT group are trying their hand at punch needle. The library fund raiser projects include small punch needle design blocks and also refrigerator magnets. Use that coloring book for your designs. Transfer it to your cloth using graphite paper or pattern transfer paper. Choose your colors, punch in the shadow effect and before you know it, you have a masterpiece. Turn that masterpiece into a refrigerator magnet by folding back 1/4" of raw edge all around the design and glue it in place to the back of the piece (which is really the front after finishing). When you work with punch needle, you are looking at the back of the piece while you work and when you turn it over, that is the finished side. Once your raw edges are glued, trace and cut out your magnet material just shy of your shape. Glue this in place. If you need more floss for this project, see Lee in the library! New pattern book is on its way into our library collection.

HARDANGER

Have you ever seen Norwegian embroidery called Hardanger? It is named after a hand craft perfected in Norway. There is also a region of Norway called Hardanger. This work is like cross stitch, cut work and traditional embroidery all wrapped up into one. If you want to learn more about this hand craft please make sure you let me know. The library is planning on purchasing a few books demonstrating this technique. How about a workshop on hardanger? Are you up for it?

CROSS STITCH

The S&TT cross stitchers are working on some wonderful projects. If you are new to cross stitch, or would like to try your hand at this, there are books and patterns available to you in the library. For those who are working on the library fund raiser projects, we have a supply of floss available for you at the library. Sharon has brought in several of her small cross stitch Holiday ornaments and is currently working on a beautiful star project.

KNITTER'S POST

The S&TT knitters are very busy making blankets, pillows and a few dish cloths. We welcomed one new member who asked to learn knitting. Come to find out, she is an expert at crochet and I have never met anyone who could crochet as fast as she can. Good work Linda! European style knitting is the next topic for discussion, now that Mary has tried this style of knitting, she seems to be sticking with it. We have new book titles on knitting, please make sure to check out some of these new additions. If you have some suggested titles, make sure you let me know.

CROCHET

The S& TT crocheters are making book marks, mittens and dishcloths and a few ornaments. If you are in need of patterns, there are several free patterns available over the Internet. The Library has a selection of crochet books that can be borrowed for 3 weeks. New crotchet books are here! Come to the library and check a few out. There is more crochet thread available to you at the library for your friends of the library fund raising projects, if you need it.
